Aspen Mays — Punched Out Stars 3, 2011

ASPEN MAYS
March 2012

Art Papers describes her work as standing "in deft opposition to the technology we have come to rely on for answers, putting faith not in complex databases and rapidly evolving technology, but rather in the ability of everyday objects and materials to spark our imagination." In doing so, she "re-imagines the world around us, finding new possibilities in the commonplace."

Born in Asheville, NC, and raised in Charleston, SC, Aspen Mays received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her solo exhibitions include Every Leaf on a Tree at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; From the Offices of Scientists at the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, IL; Concentrate and Ask Again at Golden Gallery, Chicago. Mays was a 2009-2010 Fulbright Fellow in Santiago, Chile, where she worked with astronomers who are using the world’s most advanced telescopes to look at the sky. Mays is now based in Los Angeles, CA.

SHIMON ATTIE
October 2011 and March 2012

Shimon Attie’s work crosses over between a number of different media, including video, photography, performance, installation, and public art. His ongoing work attempts to engage local communities to find new ways of representing collective and personal history, memory, and identity. He brings public places to life, whether he remembers Jewish inhabitants in Berlin by projecting images of a former Jewish neighborhood onto contemporary buildings, as in The Writing on the Wall project, or asks immigrants to respond to questions about home in New York's Lower East Side as in Between Dreams and History. During his two-part residency, which will be completed in March, Shimon will prepare an outdoor video installation through the Urban Video Project.

Born in Los Angeles in 1957, Shimon Attie lived in Europe for seven years before moving to New York in the fall of 1997. He has exhibited widely in both the United States and Europe, including shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin; and the Jewish Museum, New York.
